200 Desktops to Azure Virtual Desktop — Factory Never Stopped

The Challenge

A manufacturing group across three sites ran 200 physical desktops — each needing licensing, updates, and repairs. ERP client, label software, and weighbridge drivers ran on aging towers. IT support was drowning in tickets, hardware refresh was expensive, and godown users had no secure remote access without a VPN.

What We Did

AVD pooled host pools running Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session on D8s_v5 VMs

Golden image with the ERP client, label software, and weighbridge drivers — patched once, delivered everywhere

FSLogix profile containers on Azure Files kept every user's settings and print preferences intact between sessions

Autoscale plan: pre-warm hosts 30 minutes before each shift, consolidate and shut down after hours

About 8 users per VM with breadth-first load balancing during peak shifts

Thin clients and old monitors reused — low-cost mini-PCs instead of 30,000-rupee towers

Remote godown users log in over the internet with MFA — no VPN required

Key Outcomes

Zero shifts missed during cutover. ~₹15L+ hardware cost avoided. 60% reduction in IT support tickets. Remote godown access without VPN.
