What does AVD actually cost per user?

The honest answer: it depends on your host pool design, session density, and Autoscale policy. The biggest mistake is pricing AVD like a simple per-user SaaS. It is not — you pay for compute that runs, and that is exactly where cost escapes.

The four cost components

1. Session host VMs — the compute that hosts your desktops
2. Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session licensing — per user via M365 or per-VCORE
3. FSLogix profile storage — Azure Files for profile containers
4. Networking & extras — Azure Firewall, backups, monitoring

A real example: 200 desktops

In our 200-desktop manufacturing deployment, we used:

• D8s_v5 session hosts (8 vCPU / 32 GB) at ~8 users per VM with breadth-first load balancing
• Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session
• FSLogix profile containers on Azure Files
• Autoscale: pre-warm 30 minutes before shifts, consolidate and shut down after hours

1. Count peak concurrent users (not total employees)
2. Pick host pool size: ~6–8 users per D8s_v5
3. Add Azure Files: ~1–2 GB profile per user + 20% overhead
4. Apply Autoscale: only count hours your business actually runs
